It was about this time last year that Straylight Run debuted their self titled full length, probably not knowing how good it would actually do. Since then it has went on to sell over 200,000 copies and is still going strong with over 2,000 copies per week being sold. The EP I am reviewing now, “Prepare To Be Wrong”, is six new tracks from the band and very different from the full length material. Don’t hold me to this assumption but I would almost guess that Straylight Run got this EP out in a few short months so they could complete their Victory deal and move onto bigger things. I have also heard that the band has a DVD coming out, which will probably do very well so in the end both parties will win.
We all know that Straylight Run was born out of former Taking Back Sunday members (I am not sure which ones) but that is what garnered the band so much attention right from the start. Throw in a couple more members, one being an extremely beautiful and talented female and you have the perfect blend. Could Straylight Run be bigger than Taking Back Sunday on day? I see it happening, and I honestly like Straylight Run a lot better than Taking Back Sunday. I also like the new direction they have went on this EP. The most different sounding track on the EP is “Hands In The Sky” which features superb drum work, distorted yet complicated guitar parts and awe inspiring vocal melodies. Not the Straylight Run sound you have come to expect. Along with this track another noticeable track off the EP is “Later That Year”. Both touch on political issues as well as the war in Iraq. Kudos to the band for touching on these subjects and not just writing meaningless off the wall lyrics like a lot of bands do today. If you liked the full length then you are going to enjoy “Prepare To Be Wrong”. But like I said before do not expect the same sounding stuff as previous material, listen with an open mind to progression and growth.
With is fully hand painted cover “Prepare To Be Wrong” looks like it’s going to harvest some attention in the indie music scene. If you dig Coldplay, Fleetwood Mac and yes of course Taking Back Sunday then Straylight Run is your thing. Good music to just chill to after a long day or when you are falling asleep at night. This album shreds in its own experimental indie rock n roll kind of way, and I predict I will be jamming it for some time. Catch Straylight Run on tour this fall to check out these six new gems live.
